Christopher Chagnon’s photography career began with a Polaroid camera in 1971. While ‘sailing’ on an ore freighter as a deckhand, the urge to record the interesting people, places and captivating scenery throughout the Great Lakes gave way to his niche. His stops along the way include: Photographer for the Observer & Eccentric Newspapers, special photo assignments for the Detroit Free Press, Sport Magazine, Sports Illustrated, Associated Press, United Press International, staff photographer for the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Pistons, Westin Hotel Renaissance Center public relations photographer, UAW, Detroit Federation Of Teachers (national award winner), American Federation Of Teachers (national award winner), head photographer for the Republican National Convention Committee-Detroit 1984, fashion photo assignments for JC Penny’s, and free-lance photojournalist.
Chagnon’s photos and articles have been published in Time, Sports Illustrated, and Sport Magazine among countless other publications throughout his career. Some of his subjects include, Ronald Reagan, George Bush, Brooke Shields, ZaZa Gabor, Pricilla Presley, John Biner and Henry Ford, II.
In 1983 Chagnon opened Photocore, Inc., a professional photo processing lab, and he led the way in implementing digital photo processing in the greater Detroit area. Being one of the first labs to ‘go digital’, he brought his company to the forefront in photo technology for Detroit area photographers and studios.
Chagnon has since sold his photo lab and has located back to his home town of Onaway, Michigan, where he has dedicated his efforts into providing unique and creative portrait and commercial photography to the area.
